A naturalist will be on board the boat during each excursion to not only provide you with a rich history of the Gulf of the Farallones, but answer any questions you may have about the local wildlife and guide you on this incredible journey. Each naturalist comes from a unique background, possessing a variety of knowledge and experiences.

Steve Wood has been watching whales and birds in the Gulf of the Farallones and other areas off the California coast for more than ten years. He has worked as a naturalist on trips out to the Farallons for five. Steve developed his interest in sea life during college at UC Berkeley and earned a master's degree in marine biology from UCLA in 1999. He has worked for the National Park Service and several non-profit organizations involved in environmental stewardship, including The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito. Steve not only has a deep love for the ocean and marine mammals, but also has an interest in community response to emergencies and is certified as a Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician.

Carol Keiper is a marine ecologist specializing in marine birds and mammals. She got her undergraduate degree in education; and after teaching environmental education with a marine science focus, she wanted to do more with her twin loves: science and nature. She went back to graduate school and received her Master’s Degree in Marine Science from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories through San Jose State University. Her research focused on the ecology of marine mammals off central California relative to changing ocean conditions. She continues to be involved in at-sea surveys. Carol has also served on the Sanctuary Advisory Council for the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary. In 2005, she received an Environmental Hero Award from NOAA for her “tireless efforts to preserve and protect our nation’s environment.” She is a founding board member and researcher with Oikonos Ecosystem Knowledge, (www.oikonos.org), a non-profit organization, and has worked on seabird research and created outreach education activities on plastic pollution prevention for educators and communities. Her current project is a vessel traffic risk assessment on large cetaceans off central California. She has been leading Natural History trips both in Baja California, Alaska, and central California for over 20 years. Her expertise and experience as a teacher, naturalist, and scientist enhance her ability to share the wonders of the marine environment, and the value of conservation, with people of all ages.
